Subsidies for technology adoption: Experimental evidence from rural Cameroon

چکیده
We use a two-stage experiment to study how short-term subsidy for new product affects uptake, usage, and future demand the same (a solar lamp). an auction design gauge willingness-to-pay, randomly vary strike price across villages create random variation in purchase prices uptake villages. Our main results are that subsidies do not adversely affect subsequent use, but stimulate uptake. If depress then this effect is outweighed by additional learning about benefits of product. The net increase willingness-to-pay. However; play important allocative role, lowering via encourages households with low intensity. find any evidence supporting social anchoring beyond initial sample beneficiaries. • lamps steeply downward sloping. Prices paid intensity (no sunk cost effect). Higher today WTP anchoring). Experimenting technology raises WTP. no learning.

The intensive margin of technology adoption--Experimental evidence on improved cooking stoves in rural Senegal.
Today, almost 3 billion people in developing countries rely on biomass as primary cooking fuel, with profound negative implications for their well-being. Improved biomass cooking stoves are alleged to counteract these adverse effects. This paper evaluates take-up and impacts of low-cost improved stoves through a randomized controlled trial. The randomized stove is primarily designed to curb fir...
متن کاملAdoption Subsidies and Adoption Outcomes:
Over half a million children in the United States are currently in foster care, many of whom are at risk for long-lasting emotional and health problems. Because research suggests that adoption may be one of the most promising options for the placement of these at-risk children, various policies have been introduced at all levels of government to encourage adoption. In 1980, Congress passed the ...

This study evaluates the potential impact of improved agricultural technologies on smallholders’ crop productivity and welfare. We use household-level data from Ethiopian Rural Household Survey collected by IFPRI in 1989-2009. The survey covers around 1500 rural households drawn from four regions and 15 rural villages. Endogenous treatment effect model is employed to account for the selection b...

Rural road improvement that enhances access to input and output markets and agricultural extension services may aid agricultural technology adoption. There is a growing body of literature on the impact of rural roads on technology adoption. However, most studies have so far relied on cross-sectional surveys comparing households with and without road improvement, which have causal attribution pr...
متن کاملCommunications, Attitudes toward Uncertainty and Agricultural Technology Adoption: Experimental Evidence from Bangladesh
The literature discusses risk aversion as one of the behavioral determinants of technology adoption. However, little attention has been paid to measuring ambiguity aversion of poor people in developing countries or in finding the role of ambiguity aversion in technology adoption. Risk experiments in the previous studies have been designed in such a way that individuals face the risky and/or amb...
